FIELD
While in seminary, Seiya served in a Japanese congregation in Torrance, California, as an intern pastor. There he learned the importance of preserving his Japanese identity, indispensable to ministering to the people of his own culture here in America. Currently Seiya and Tracy work with Japanese youth in Torrance.
In addition to the weekly Sunday school, they engage their youth in various activities, such as summer volunteer work, Samaritan’s Purse projects, and biweekly study groups.
Seiya and Tracy hope to lead each student to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ before they graduate from high school. Seiya also hopes to reach and disciple Japanese foreign-exchange students on secular university campuses in Southern California.
Their ministries include: Yak & Snack: Wednesday Night Youth night held in our apartment. Games, Bible quiz, and a Bible study followed by dinner is the normal schedule. They’ve also done cultural activities such as carving pumpkins, decorating Christmas cookies, coloring Easter eggs, and making gingerbread houses to broaden students’ understanding of American culture.
-Sanctuary Japanese Bible Fellowship: Every Sunday a group of Japanese believers meets in a local church for Sunday worship. They sing Japanese and English praise songs, pray, and study God’s Word.
-Ladies’ Cooking & Bible Study: Every Friday Tracy meets with several Japanese ladies in their apartment. Together they make American recipes and study God’s Word together. Recently they have learned about Jesus’ healing of the sick, the Last Supper and Passover. In the cooking portion, the ladies have learned how to make mashed potatoes, corned beef with veggies, roasted chicken, and English scones.
FAITH
Seiya first came to church in his home country, Japan, and there, through an ESL program, American missionaries/English teachers significantly impacted his coming to faith in Jesus Christ at the age of 19.
Tracy was born to Christian parents and came to know Jesus as her Savior at an early age. Her faith was solidified when she went to Japan as an exchange student. Seiya and Tracy were appointed by Missions Door in March 1998 for a ministry of ethnic church planting (Japanese).
