FIELD
While attending Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, Mack read of the church’s exodus from the inner city and visited ministries in Chicago. He and Joan committed themselves to return to the black church, community, and public schools.
In 1969 they moved into Chicago’s West Side and began attending Keystone Baptist Church. In 1972, Mack was appointed by Missions Door to pioneer a ministry to black students in the Chicago area.
Mack says, “As many college-age black youths lose interest in church, ours are arming themselves for battle in the Kingdom, and upon graduation are situating themselves to serve a new generation of college students.”
Sankofa Student Ministries serves black college students attending campuses located in Chicago and students from urban Conservative Baptist churches who are attending colleges in the Midwest.
With enthusiastic support from Chicago churches and indigenous black leadership from paid and volunteer staff, the ministry reaches students at DePaul University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-area community colleges and others.
